Identity: beyond naming

I wrote this Sept. 20:
People in the Bible are often identified not just by their name, but by their familial and geographical origin: "X, son of Y, from the land of Z." I was just reminded yesterday that I don't know a person until I know something about their parents, and about where they're from.
I don't remember what provoked that, but there it is.
